If you or someone in your family has been unwell recently you should think about a clean-up. Sure, the person might be feeling better, but there’s every chance the germs are still present. The priority has to be to help stop them spreading further.
It goes without saying that personal hygiene is important. That means ensuring everyone washes hands regularly, and particularly:
- Before cooking
- After going to the toilet
- After changing nappies, handling dirty tissues or rubbish
- After handling pets or their toys
Playing the investigator
Think about where your unwell child or family member has been or spends a lot of time. You are looking for the surfaces and items where those hidden germs could be lurking. Give them a thorough clean and ensure they are disinfected to help kill germs.
Gather all your child’s favourite toys together and if possible clean them with warm soapy water or put them in the washing machine. Then spray them or wipe them over with a disinfectant. If your child puts things in his mouth wipe again with a damp cloth. Also, remember to clean their toothbrushes.
Systematically go around the house with a disinfectant spray or disinfectant wipes and wipe over door knobs, light switches, hand rails, TV remotes, phones, keyboards, mouse, kitchen bench, tabletops, toilets, floors, bathroom sink and surrounds. If your child is crawling or spends a lot of time on a hard floor, clean the floor with a floor cleaner and then disinfect.
Bedding and linen
Strip the bed and wash the mattress protector, sheets, quilt cover, pillow case and pillow (separate wash) in a hot wash cycle adding some disinfectant to the rinse cycle for extra freshness. Repeat the process for towels and hand towels.
No doubt you have made a trip to the doctor, so take the car seat out of the car, give it a good vacuum, take off the cover if you can and wash in a hot wash cycle. If not, spot clean the stains and let it dry in the sun. Then reinstall the car seat back into the car as per the manual, or have a professional do it.
Finally, open the windows and door to let some fresh air in..
