Cleaning kitchen surfaces

Kitchen Cleaning TipsYou can use antibacterial surface cleansing wipes to clean and disinfect kitchen surfaces, or a clean cloth and antibacterial surface cleanser. To help stop germs spreading, there are two important steps in the cleaning process. Firstly, it's important to regularly clean and disinfect the surfaces in your home that are touched regularly by the members of your household, like fridge door handles, cupboard door handles, taps and doorknobs. Secondly, it’s important to provide and encourage the use of an effective hand sanitiser in order to help stop the spread of germs.

Food preparation surfaces

You also need to clean and disinfect food preparation surfaces just before using them to prepare food and immediately after contact with any raw food, like poultry, meat, fish, eggs. Use a kitchen disinfecting product, such as Dettol Surface Cleanser Trigger or Dettol Surface Cleanser Wipes. Make sure you don’t forget your hands either, by using a hand sanitiser to get rid of germs.

Keep a clean refrigerator

Clean your refrigerator regularly and wipe up any accidental spills promptly. After you’ve wiped, clean and disinfect any contaminated surfaces using Dettol Surface Cleanser Trigger. Remember to clean and disinfect the fridge handle and door seals regularly as well – these are prime touching surfaces in your kitchen and can often be overlooked. Make your sink sparkle

Sinks need cleaning regularly using products that can remove soap scum and scale. If the sink is contaminated with germs from raw food, you need to clean and disinfect promptly. And, since you cannot clean drains very easily, you may need to use a suitable disinfectant regularly to reduce germs and odours. Your hands easily carry germs so make sure you use a hand sanitiser or handwash when you last touch any taps – it’s easy to forget that taps when you’re cleaning food from the main bowl.

Beware the kitchen bin

Empty, clean and disinfect your kitchen bin regularly and make sure you use a bin with a closing lid. Keeping your rubbish covered will help limit the possibility of an insect or rodent infestation.

Remove food debris from tables and high chairs, and then disinfect them before meals Change hand towels and tea cloths regularly, and consider using paper towels as an alternative, throwing germs away. Cleaning with dirty cleaning cloths could potentially spread germs, so if you are using cloth towels, use hot water and/or a sanitising laundry rinse when laundering them.

Replace kitchen carpets with hard surface flooring, such as tile, linoleum, or laminates. These are more hygienic because they are easier to clean and do not collect debris in the same way that carpets can. Use an all purpose disinfectant cleaner to help clean and disinfect hard flooring; if your floors are wood, use a product that is safe on wood surfaces.
